How Do Pregnancy Tests Work?

When you get pregnant, your body produces a hormone called hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin). It builds rapidly and enters your blood and urine stream. A pregnancy test detects hCG in your urine. If it does not detect the hormone, you are either not pregnant, or it is too early in your pregnancy.

When Should I Take A Pregnancy Test?

Pregnancy tests have different levels of sensitivity. Some tests can detect the hCG hormone even before a missed period. Others can’t detect hCG until afterward. Experts recommend waiting a day or two after your missed period to take a test.

Can a Pregnancy Test be Wrong?

Although rare, pregnancy tests can be wrong. If it is wrong, it is most likely a false negative. This means you are pregnant, but it’s either too early in your pregnancy for hCG to be detected, or you’ve taken the test wrong.

Here’s how to take the test correctly:

• Check the expiration date

• Wait for the recommended number of days

• Take the test in the morning when your urine is concentrated

• Wait the recommended amount of time to see the results

If the test is negative, but your period still hasn’t started, you may want to see your healthcare provider. Your provider may suggest doing a blood test for the most accurate results.

What If My Pregnancy Test Comes Back Positive?

If your test is positive, you need to confirm the results with an ultrasound. A positive pregnancy test shows the possibility of pregnancy, but an ultrasound verifies it. Talk with us to get an ultrasound referral to a nearby center. Call 740-622-3808.
